The Real J.R.R. Tolkien: Tragedy, War & the Birth of Middle-earth
Most people know J.R.R. Tolkien as the author of *The Lord of the Rings* and *The Hobbit*, but few understand the man behind the myth. This video, based on Humphrey Carpenter's definitive biography, uncovers the real Tolkien—a man shaped by childhood loss, the horrors of World War I, and a deep linguistic obsession. You'll learn how his mother's death, the Battle of the Somme, and his invented languages led to the creation of Middle-earth. Discover why Tolkien hated allegory, how his 'Atlantis complex' haunted his dreams, and why he believed his stories were more than fantasy. This is not just a biography; it's the story of how a grieving scholar built an entire world.
