The Ladder of Opportunity -This study explores the long-term effects of the Moving to Opportunity
The Effects of Exposure to Better Neighborhoods on Children_ New Evidence from the Moving to Opportunity Experiment. This study explores the long-term effects of the Moving to Opportunity (MTO) experiment on children's economic and social status in adulthood. Key findings indicate that children who moved to lower-poverty communities before age 13 had significantly higher personal incomes in adulthood and were more likely to attend high-quality universities. This early exposure effect not only improved economic prospects but also enhanced family stability for young women, manifested in increased marriage rates and decreased fertility rates among single mothers. Conversely, for children who moved during adolescence, the study found no significant positive benefits and even showed negative effects on some indicators. In conclusion, this literature demonstrates that the quality of childhood environment has a decisive impact on intergenerational poverty and social mobility, and that this positive effect is proportional to the length of time children are in a superior environment.
