The Canon Scam: Why Elites Decide What History Forgets
Every masterpiece resting under museum glass did not survive history by accident. It was handpicked by gatekeepers to manufacture your consent. Based on the cultural research collection Kaanon ja marginaali (Canon and Margin), published by the Finnish Literature Society (SKS), this presentation unmasks how the cultural canon was never about artistic quality—it was always an instrument of political power. Slide 1: The Sanctuary Is a Crime Scene You walk through heavy oak doors into a climate-controlled hall. The silent rooms whisper that these paintings and epics are the peak of humanity. Do not buy the lie. History did not act like an impartial sieve. The museum is not a sanctuary; it is a crime scene where competing voices were eliminated. Slide 2: The Archive Is an Execution Chamber We trust historical archives to preserve the truth. In reality, administrative categorization kills it. If an elite clerk does not invent a folder for minority slang or working-class songs, they cease to exist. Erasure does not require burning books at midnight. It only requires a bureaucrat labeling your lived experience as trivial. Slide 3: Lock the Sister in the Attic Nationalists built towering masculine epics full of warriors and wizards to forge an aggressive identity. At the same time, they locked emotional, women-led folk poetry in the attic. Critics called female sorrow tame and useless for boys heading to the battlefield. They forced raw, grieving voices into rigid mathematical verse to murder their authentic pulse. Slide 4: Fantasy as a Shield Against Trauma Why did 19th-century academics obsess over folklore dragons instead of true historical stories? Because real survival was covered in blood. Brutal imperial occupations, torture, and burned villages were dangerous to talk about. Scholars manufactured safe fairy tales because governments were terrified of real memory. Slide 5: Fear of the Groove and the Body Elites panicked whenever the working class wrote love letters, sang danceable rhymes, or laughed at raunchy physical satire. Power cannot govern a crowd that is dancing to its own beat. When high society mocks lowbrow taste, they are defending their right to govern your mind. High culture is frozen taxidermy. The living, breathing soul of humanity has always survived on the margins.
