Made in God's Image or the Ape's? The Forgotten 1869 War

L’uomo fatto ad imagine di Dio fu anche fatto ad imagine della scimia

Francesco Barrago

In 1869, before Charles Darwin even published The Descent of Man, an Italian surgeon delivered a lecture that shattered Victorian society: What if humans were not just created in the image of God, but also in the image of the ape? Slide 1: The Ultimate Heresy Imagine standing before a room packed with high-ranking clergy and announcing that their foundational myth is biologically wrong. That is exactly what Dr. Francesco Barrago did in deeply religious Sardinia, nearly inciting a riot. Slide 2: The Four-Hand Lie For generations, elite anatomists claimed apes had four hands (Quadrumana) while humans uniquely had two (Bimana). It was comforting, neat, and a total lie. Barrago exposed the bone-deep truth: an ape foot has the exact same tarsals, heel bones, and flexors as a human foot. We are just primates in tight shoes. Slide 3: The Brain Myth Exposed When limbs failed to separate us, the establishment retreated to the skull, claiming apes lacked a hippocampus minor. Fresh dissections tore that defense apart. The primate brain blueprint is virtually identical to ours; the difference is volume, not magic. Slide 4: Fighting Scripture with Scripture Facing public death threats from cathedral pulpits, Barrago did not back down. Instead of dismissing faith, he used Genesis to defend natural selection, arguing that divine creation unfolds across vast geological epochs, not six literal days. Slide 5: Darwin Takes Notice This Mediterranean rebellion reverberated to England. Charles Darwin himself was so impressed by this bold work that he updated the second edition of The Descent of Man to cite Barrago by name. Slide 6: The Tragic Irony Barrago died young at forty-seven, devastated by personal loss and blinded by the racial pseudo-science of his century. Today, he rests in Cagliari's monumental cemetery—just paces away from the very priest who cursed him from the altar. About the Author and Work: Dr. Francesco Francesco Barrago (1835–1881) was an accomplished Italian surgeon, ophthalmologist, and academic in Cagliari known for operating on the impoverished for free and introducing modern anesthetics to his region. His groundbreaking 1869 work, L’uomo fatto ad imagine di Dio fu anche fatto ad imagine della scimia (Man Made in the Image of God Was Also Made in the Image of the Ape), remains one of history’s boldest early public defenses of human evolution and academic freedom.
