Globalization, Structural Change and Productivity Growth
Study on the Relationship between Globalization, Structural Change, and Productivity Growth 全球化、结构变革与生产力增长的关系研究Globalization s Two Paths This study explores how structural changes in the context of globalization affect overall national productivity growth through the flow of labor between different productivity sectors. The authors found that since 1990, Asian countries have significantly boosted their economies through the transfer of labor from agriculture to modern industry, while Latin America and Africa have experienced a "reverse transformation"—labor flowing to inefficient sectors—thus hindering growth. The study points out that over-reliance on natural resource exports, overvalued domestic currencies, and rigid labor markets are key factors contributing to impaired productivity. Conversely, maintaining competitive exchange rates and market flexibility can effectively drive economic transformation towards high value-added industries. The report emphasizes that the benefits of globalization are not automatic; their effectiveness depends heavily on a country's ability to induce a shift of labor towards high-productivity activities.
