The Censorship Paradox: 1984 & Brave New World

|This research material explores the impact of internet censorship on college students' information acquisition and political attitudes through a field experiment conducted at top-tier universities in China. Researchers found that although students could bypass the "Great Firewall" using tools, their initial active demand for overseas news was extremely low, partly due to underestimating the value of uncensored information. The experiment indicates that guiding students to access foreign media through short-term incentives can foster lasting reading habits and significantly enhance their awareness of politically sensitive events. This exposure not only increased students' distrust of domestic media censorship but also altered their perceptions of the economic situations in China and abroad. Furthermore, although there is an information-sharing phenomenon among students, the scope of this social transmission is limited and insufficient to widely inform the entire group about blocked content.
